We are excited to announce that we have set the date for our second annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. It will be Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 10am to 1pm at the Kalkaska Middle School in Kalkaska, MI. If you were able to join us this year the event will have a similar set-up. We will be looking into the reservation system and making some changes there, but everything else will be the same.
We will take paints, lacquers, paint thinners, old gasoline and oil, pesticides, herbicides, poisons, mercury, and you name it. Basically, if you question whether or not it should go in the recycle bin or trash it should be saved for this event, where our vendor will recycle or properly dispose of the item in question.
We will have more details to follow in the coming months. In the meantime, mark your calendars!
Quick stats from our 2017 event:
-150 Kalkaska County residents participated.
-22,000 pounds of waste (11 tons) brought in! 10,867 pounds of that was latex paint alone.
-Almost all of that latex paint will be recycled into new colors by one of the vendors. The vendor was very excited because one colors they make is ‘Kalkaska Sand’!! All the dried cans of paint will be recycled separately and the cans become scrap metal.
-The other half of the waste is recycled and/or properly disposed of by the another vendor at a large facility near Metro Detroit.
