ORV Trails Galore!

If you are an avid rider (ATV/ORV and Snowmobiles) then you’re in luck in Kalkaska County! There are tons of trails for you to explore - over 100 miles worth!! Many gas stations around the County carry paper maps that you can purchase on the spot, but you can do a little recon before you start your trip on a variety of websites.

First you should check out the MI Department of Natural Resources interactive map of trail routes. We recently discovered an app called Avenza that is super helpful in having offline trail maps at your fingertips. It works rather well, even in areas of no cellphone coverage!

Before departing on your ride, be sure to leave your route/trail name, itinerary, and contact information. Please ride safely and leave the trails better than when you found them!

MOTORIZED TRAIL ETIQUETTE

ALL RIDERS

  • Stay on the trail – they are marked for a reason. Rocks, fencing and barbed wire are just a few examples of what could be hidden under the snow.

    1. Be aware of two-way traffic and trail groomers, and “Ride Right” by keeping on the right side of the trail.

    2. When you see nonmotorized trail users coming from the opposite direction; please slow down, pull over and yield the right-of-way.

    3. Always yield to uphill motorized traffic. Uphill traffic may have difficulty starting again if stopped.

    4. If you stop on the trail, use designated stop areas and remove your helmet. Never stop side-by-side, in the middle, at the crest of a hill, on a corner or in the intersection of a trail. A helmet masks your features and can be intimidating.

    5. Leave no trace – pack it in; pack it out. If you see litter, please pick it up.

    6. If you love Michigan’s trails, get involved and join your local trail organization!
